Hounsai Hanso Soshitsu Farewell Service

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Genshitsu Sen (posthumous-name: Hōunsai Hansō Sōshitsu), who passed away on August 14, 2025 at the age of 102.

 

Born in Kyoto, Japan on April 19, 1923, Dr. Sen was known for his international promotion of 'Peacefulness Through a Bowl of Tea' and was a cherished leader and promoter of the Japanese Way of Tea for Hawaii and the world. We are eternally grateful to have known him for his teachings, immense generosity and kindness throughout the 74 years since our inception.

 

Chadō Urasenke Tankōkai Hawaii Association will host a farewell service for Dr. Sen.

 

[Date] Sunday, October 12, 2025

[Time] 5:00 p.m. 

[Place] Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin

(1727 Pali Highway, Honolulu, HI 96813) 

 

Everyone is encouraged to attend and the public is welcome.

 

Tea service (Teicha) and light refreshments will be provided following the service.

 

Parking will be available at three (3) locations:  

Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin (1727 Pali Highway); Hongwanji Mission School (1728 Pali Highway); and Prince David Kawānanakoa Middle School   (49 Funchal Street).

Hounsai Hanso Soshitsu Farewell Service

Farewell Service for Hōunsai Hanso Sōshitsu was held on October 12th at Honpa Hongwanji Hawai’i Betsuin. Guided by the spirit of “Peacefulness through a Bowl of Tea” Hounsai Sōsho graciously established the first overseas branch here in Hawai’i in 1951.

With heartfelt gratitude and deep respect for the Way of Tea, we continue to cherish and carry forward his legacy and aspiration into the future.

Hounsai Sosho Farewell Service in Hawaii

Urasenke Konnichi-an (Kamikyo-ku, Kyoto-City) announced on August 4th that the Farewell service for Sen Genshitsu Daisosho who passed away on August 14th at age 102 will be held on Thursday, November 27, 2025 from 1pm to 3pm at Kyoto Kokusai Kaikan Event Hall (422, yoto-city, Iwakura Oosagi-cho, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto City).

 

While there will be no formal ceremony, flowers can be offered at this event. They are asking for use of public transportation as well as use of mask and temperature checks at attendance.

Condolences: Hounsai Sen Genshitsu Daisosho Passes

It is with heavy hearts that we send you the official notice from Urasenke of the passing of Dr. Genshitsu Sen on Thursday, August 14, 2025 in Kyoto at the age of 102.

Notice on Daisosho’s passing  appears on the Urasenke Konnichian website in the Japanese language including a message from Zabosai Oiemoto.  A translation of the official announcement from Konnichian, as well as the message from Zabōsai Oiemoto concerning the events leading up to Daisōshō's sudden passing can be found in the attached PDF document.

 

Please note that the wake and funeral service will be conducted privately, and we are asked not to send flowers or monetary gifts of condolence.

 

At this difficult time, please keep Dr. Sen, the Sen family, and all those associated with Urasenke in your thoughts and prayers.
