It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Genshitsu Sen (posthumous-name: Hōunsai Hansō Sōshitsu), who passed away on August 14, 2025 at the age of 102.

 

Born in Kyoto, Japan on April 19, 1923, Dr. Sen was known for his international promotion of 'Peacefulness Through a Bowl of Tea' and was a cherished leader and promoter of the Japanese Way of Tea for Hawaii and the world. We are eternally grateful to have known him for his teachings, immense generosity and kindness throughout the 74 years since our inception.

 

Chadō Urasenke Tankōkai Hawaii Association will host a farewell service for Dr. Sen.

[Time] 5:00 p.m. 

[Place] Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin

(1727 Pali Highway, Honolulu, HI 96813) 

 

Everyone is encouraged to attend and the public is welcome.

 

Tea service (Teicha) and light refreshments will be provided following the service.

 

Parking will be available at three (3) locations:  

Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin (1727 Pali Highway); Hongwanji Mission School (1728 Pali Highway); and Prince David Kawānanakoa Middle School   (49 Funchal Street).

YABUSAME in Hawai‘i 2026 - Tea Offering Announcement

With the season of fresh greenery upon us,

“Yabusame in Hawai‘i 2026” will be held at Kualoa Ranch on Sunday, June 14, 2026.

Yabusame, the traditional Japanese horseback archery ceremony presented by the Ogasawara-ryū, is conducted in prayer for the prosperity of the land and peace throughout the world. On this occasion, Urasenke Hawaii Association has been given the honor of offering tea in conjunction with this event.

 

Date: Sunday, June 14, 2026

Door Open: 12:30 pm

Entertainment: 1:30 pm

Yabusame: 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

* Tea offering: 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm (tentative)

Venue: Kualoa Ranch

* Please arrange your own transportation to Kualoa Ranch. Shuttle service will not be provided.

【Regarding Admission to Kualoa Ranch and Yabusame Viewing】

Registration is required for entry to Kualoa Ranch and for viewing the Yabusame event.

Please note that admission to Kualoa Ranch on the day of the event is limited to 500 guests. As of May 9, more than half of the tickets have already been claimed, and tickets may be fully reserved before the event date.

Admission is donation-based, and contributions of even $1 are welcome.
